Newgrange

[back]

5000 yr old megalithic tomb thingy....those olden times people really knew how to do things on a BIG scale.

They built an artificial hill, about 90 metres across, using stones from up to 70km away.  On the winter solstice, at sunrise, the sun comes in through the roof box (square hole over the front door, and illuminates the entire (small) chamber inside for about 15 minutes..... rest of the year.... nada.

The facade has been rebuilt from stones found onsite...and the hill has been cut into at the front door to allow for the steps to climb over the large stones without damaging them. The reconstruction of the facade is "controversial"... I can see why.

Newgrange is about 45 minutes drive north of Dublin.  The photos are of the visitor's centre bridge over a (very nice) river, Newgrange and it's post hole circles, and a cute little stone building.. no idea what it is... but got a lot of photos of it.
