Crystalline Glazes

Crystalline glazes are a very cool way to complete a work.

They do need a soak at around 1250 degrees C, so they won't work on all bodies.

The photos on this page show some of the test pieces I made for a Materials Science project.

This glaze used 2% Nickel Oxide as a colourant.  The large crystals are zinc silicate.  The very small crystals were identified as tridymite.

 
 

Below are some of the optical microscope photos (scanned - but didn't come out too well).

These photos are of various samples made during the project. Some are of a 2% Cobalt Oxide coloured glaze, the rest are of glazes using 2% Nickel Oxide as the colourant.
